The Swamy temple of Arulmighu Thiyagaraja in Thiruvarur is famous in many respects. This is the most revered and glorified one in all of Lord Shiva's Attaveeratta temples. The Panchamuga and Pari Nadaswaram made ancient musical instruments here and it is important to note that these ancient musical instruments have been used in this town until today. The mangrove forests in Muthuppettai hold an important role in the beauty of the nature of this district, in addition to the sprawling paddy fields on both sides of rivers, canals and roads.
The town of Thiruvarur, too, was one of many famous capitals of the Chola dynasty. The great Kulothunga Chola ruled from this very place during times of yore. About the Elkan
On the Thiruvarur-Thanjavur highway, Lankan, where the Arulmighu Subramanya Swamy Temple is located, is 1 km north of Mukundanur and 3 km south of Kappana Mangalam on the Thiruvarur-Kumbakonam road. Raja Raja Cholan I established a permanent endowment for the requirements of the periodic poojas and festivals. In praise of the glory of Lord Subramanya, the holy poet Arunagirinathar devoted his famous hymns to Thiruppugazh. The holy sculpture of the presiding deity, Lord Arulmighu Arumuga, sitting on his peacock inside the sanctum sanctorum in this temple, is a magnificent work of art. Every year at the Thaipoosam festival celebrated in mid-January, this temple attracts devotees in large numbers.
Muthupettai Woodland Mangrove
The marshy land in Muthupettai is the primary tourist attraction in this town. This panoramic spot is still evergreen with mangrove forest trees, in a wide area of 120 square km. For locals, seeing the wide expanse of backwater and the mangrove forests dotting all over the place is a wonderful sight. Along with the deep-rooted mangrove trees, other types of trees like Thandal, Thillai, Narikanthal, Neermulli also grow and contribute to the beauty of the lagoon. This lagoon has seventy-three colourful fish species. By motorboat, tourists can enter the Mangrove Forest of Thalaimunai. The point at Jambavanodai, near Muthupettai, is an hour away. A wooden path 162 metres long was built to enjoy the mangrove forest for the benefit of tourists. During the monsoon season between November and January, a large number of birds migrate here from all over the world. Eighty different species of migratory birds gather after travelling long distances.
Thiruvarur's Atmosphere
Thiruvarur has a hot and humid climate. The best time of the year to visit Thiruvarur is during the monsoon season, which runs from June to September, and during the winter season, which runs from December to February. Summers are extremely hot in Thiruvarur with the temperature rising to above 40 degrees Celsius. The town is renowned for being one of the Chola Empire's five traditional capitals, where Kulothunga purchased Thiruvarurur.
Udayamarthandapuram Sanctuary of Birds
The Udayamarthandapuram Bird Sanctuary is a protected area in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, situated in the Thiruvarur District. It was designated in December 1999 as a protected area. A variety of birds live in it. Udayamarthandapuram Bird Sanctuary's geographical location is 10 ° 26 '59' N 79 ° 27 '58' E. A region of around 0.45 sq km covers the Udayamarthandapuram Bird Sanctuary and is fed by an irrigation tank that receives water from the Mettur Dam. Between the months of April and August, the tank stays empty. Purple-moorhen and open-bill storks can be seen here throughout the months of February and March. The white-ibis, Indian reef heron, white-necked stork, grey-heron, coot, night heron, purple-heron, tiny cormorant, spoonbill, and darter are also migratory birds in the sanctuary.
From September onwards, some bird forms can be seen here. During the months of February and March, a large number of purple Moorhen and Openbill storks can be seen. Coot, Grey Heron, Black Headed Ibis, Night Heron, Purple Heron, Little Cormorant, Darter, Spoonbill, Indian Reef Heron, and White Necked Stork are also visited by many migratory birds. Around 10,000 birds congregate here from November to December during the peak season. Throughout the year, visitors will visit the sanctuary. The best time to visit the shrine, however, is during the month of November. For the visitors inside the sanctuary, two public observation towers were built. In the PWD Rest House and private lodges in Muthupet and Thiruthuraipoondi, there are accommodation facilities available. During the year, the sanctuary is open to visitors.
Sanctuary Of Vaduvoor Birds
The Vaduvoor Bird Sanctuary has situated 25 km from Thanjavur and 30 km from Thiruvarur on Lake Vaduvoor. The sanctuary was founded in 1999 and attracts more than 40 species of water birds such as the White Ibis, Painted Stork, Grey Pelican, Pintails, Cormorants, Teals, Herons, Spoonbills, Darters, Coots, Open bill Storks, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, etc. The sanctuary has basic facilities for visitors from the two watch towers to stay overnight and enjoy watching the birds.
