One of the fastest-growing cities in the state of Tamil Nadu is Cuddalore, located on the coast of the Bay of Bengal. In the Tamil language, the word Cuddalore refers to "sea town," and the town is indeed abundant with beautiful beaches. The town is renowned for its beautiful temples as well. There are two districts in Cuddalore, namely the Old Town and the New Town. While flowing through the town, the Gedilam river separates the Old Town from Thirupadiripuliyur, the New Town. During the Mughal rule, the Old Town was called 'Islamabad' and it continues to be a Muslim-dominated city. In the 1748 to 1752 era, Cuddalore was also the capital of the English Possessions.

Pichavaram Mangrove Forest

The Mangrove Forest of Pichavaram, situated in Pichavaram in the Cuddalore District, is the world's second-largest mangrove forest. It is located approximately 14 km from Chidambaram and consists of 177 bird species belonging to 41 families and 15 orders. In this forest, visitors will spot locals, residents, real migrants, and migrant birds, including, egrets, herons, cormorants, pelicans, and others. During the months of September to April and November to January, travelers can see these birds when their population is at its peak. In addition, water sports such as canoeing and rowing can also be enjoyed in the forest as it is connected to the Vellar River and the Coleroon River.

 

Sea Port

The Port of the Sea is situated at the confluence of the Paravanar and Gadilam Rivers, also known as the Port of Cuddalore. At a distance of around 1.6 km from the shore, various ships anchor in the mid-stream, and the cargo is discharged and filled by lighters. The Cuddalore district and parts of Tiruchirapalli and Salem constitute the hinterland located at Cuddalore Port. This region is rich in minerals and has Neyveli lignites. Several oil crushing mills are also exhibited in the Sea Port

Silver Beach

Located on the eastern side of Cuddalore, Silver Beach, in Devanampattinam, is visited by a variety of travelers. The beach gives visitors the chance to enjoy different sports, such as horse riding and boating. In addition, the beach also houses a boathouse and a play area for children. It is the second long beach on the coast of Coromandel and is considered one of Asia's longest sea beaches.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva Nataraja and Lord Govindaraja Perumal, Natrajar Temple is spread over 40 acres of land. The temple shows the architecture of the Dravidian style and has exquisite sculptures engraved on the walls. It also has a Gopuram, the oldest of which is the Eastern Gopuram. The Hall of Dance is one of the temple's main attractions. The temple was restored by Simhavarman, the Pallava king.

Padaleeswarar Temple

In Cuddalore, Padaleeswarar Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who was also called Padaleeswarar, is located. During the medieval Chola and Pallava periods, this temple was built. Saivism is thought to have been adopted at this temple by the Saivite saint Appar.

Veeranam Lake

TEMPLE OF SINGIRIKUDI SRI LAKSHMI NARASIMHA SWAMY

On the outskirts of Cuddalore, Singirikudi, the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple is situated. Legend has it that Singirikudi is the place where Lord Narasimha was worshipped by Prahlada and is thus among the four Narasimha Temples of the area of Tamilnadu. As this divine place has an overwhelming religious value, a visit to this pilgrimage site is considered very auspicious.

TEMPLE VEERATTESWARAR TEMPLE:

Veeratteswarar Temple in Thiruvathigai Village, Cuddalore District, is devoted to Lord Shiva. As per belief, offering prayers at Veeratteswarar Temple can cure problems associated with one's stomach or any curse, especially related to children. One can see 108 Bharatnatyam poses that are engraved in this temple. Veeratteswarar is in fact, a temple complex that houses different temples of equal religious significance.

SWAMI TEMPLE BHUVARAHA

Bhuvaraha Swami, situated in Srimushnam in the Cuddalore district, is another ancient temple where devotees pay homage to Varaha, an avatar of Lord Vishnu. During the ruling time of Medieval Chola, the presence of this temple came first and was further expanded by Achutappa Nayak - one of the Thanjavur Nayaks. This temple, like Padaleeswarar, also has Dravidian architecture and is surrounded by a granite wall

SHIVA SUBRAMANYA SWAMY TEMPLE SRI VALLI DEVASHENA SHIVA SUBRAMANYA

One of the popular pilgrimage destinations is this tiny holy site in Cuddalore. This temple, dedicated to Lord Murugan and Goddess Valli, has an elegant design which attracts a lot of devotees. The famous festivals that are grandly celebrated in this temple are the Karthigai Festival (November) and Shashti Festival (November-December).
