Madurai to Shirdi Pilgrimage Package (2N/3D)

Madurai is the location. Synonymous with the world-renowned temple of Meenakshi Aman and the jasmine flowers of Madurai Malli or Madurai, this ancient town lies on the banks of the state's Vaigai River. Madurai is currently one of the hundred cities scheduled under the Prime Minister's Smart City Scheme to be built as smart cities.

Meenakshi, or Arulimigu Meenakshi Thirukkoil Sundareshwarar, dates back to the seventh century. The city's skyline is dominated by an architectural masterpiece, the grandeur of a temple with 14 towers or gopurams, as high as 45-50 meters. Most of the present temple structure was built under the reign of Tirumalai Nayaka in the 17th century after parts of it had been destroyed in previous centuries. Within the temple, the sculptures spell magnificence and architectonic brilliance. With beautiful depictions of gods and goddesses, the ceiling of the temple is a riot of colors. At the entrance of the Sundareswarar and Meenakshi shrines, called the Mukuruny Vinayakar, a massive statue of Lord Ganesha, built of a single stone, is remarkable.

For more than one reason, Gandhiji's link with the temple town of Madurai is important and the city's Gandhi Memorial Museum is counted as one of the country's five Gandhi Sangrahalayas (Gandhi Museums). Housed in the historic Tamukkam Palace, part of the Nayaka Dynasty's Rani Mangammal, which was built in the 17th century, the museum has a rich collection of paintings, photographs, and articles related to the life of the king. Without visiting its vibrant, action-packed, colorful markets, Madurai is full. The flower market, which must be visited for the famous Madurai Jasmine or 'Madurai Malli', is located near the Mattuthavani bus stand.  is the subject of the market as men and women deftly string these beauties into pretty garlands that are sold like hotcakes, a flower that has inspired none other than the French perfume-maker Christian Dior.
