Hungary exudes a powerful sense of culture and history at every stage right from the many quaint villages to the magnificent City of Lights, Budapest, and the fantastic scenery. However, Budapest, which is justifiably comparable to cities like Paris and Prague, is by far Hungary's most important tourist attraction. You certainly have to spare some time to fly outside the capital, considering the phenomenal places to visit and things to do. The classic historical attractions of towns and cities of all sizes have been very well preserved, many of which show influences from various cultures, including Italian Renaissance designers and Turkish invaders. Moreover, Hungary's countryside features some of the most seductive landscapes that are nowhere to be found in all of Eastern Europe. In reality, no matter where you are in Hungary, the magnificent lakes and mountains, as well as the beautiful rivers, will never be too far away.

Castle Buda, Budapest

M ajestic dimensions and exquisite architecture, this spectacular historical landmark-now a UNESCO World Heritage Site-ranks up there with Versailles. This newer structure, which was destroyed during the Siege of 1686, was reconstructed for the Habsburg monarchy in the 18th century.

About the Danube

The magnificent Danube River flows from north to south through Hungary and breaks the city in two as it passes through Budapest. The Freedom Bridge, a favorite place for locals, is one of the best sunset views of the river and of both Buda and Pest. The Danube Bend, one of the most popular recreational and excursion spots in the world, is another great place from which to view this majestic river. This is where the river winds through the densely wooded mountains of Visegrád.

Historic Towns of Spa

More than 2,000 years ago, the reputation of Hungary for its hot springs and baths dates back to the time of the Romans, who highly regarded the healing effects of Hungarian thermal waters. Then it was the turn of the Turks in the 16th century who built the many Turkish baths still in use today. All told, more than 1,000 springs provide natural and medical spas with medicinal and thermal water, one of the most famous being Lake Lake

Basílica of Esztergom

The Basilica of Esztergom (Esztergom basilica) is well worth the 46-kilometer ride from Budapest. This impressive Catholic church, officially named the Primatial Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary Assumed Into Heaven and St. Adalbert, overlooking the Danube River on Castle Hill, was built in 1507 and is not only the largest religious structure in the world, but it is also the highest, with its enormous dome extending 100 meters into the air.

When visiting Budapest, the Hungarian Parliament Building (Országház). Flanked by the no less impressive building of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Museum, the building

The Lillafüred Cave

Another very popular spa destination in Hungary is Lillafüred, in the Bükk Mountains. It is also renowned for its many beautiful caves, all within easy walking distance of the city. The István Cave, with its fantastic stalactite formations, and the Petofi Cave, popular the world over for the impressions of extinct plant species left in its limestone walls, are some of the most fascinating to explore.

National Park in Hortobágy

The National Park of Hortobágy is what you might call quintessential Hungary. Here you can discover a range of wonderful attractions and fun things to do all while soaking up the rich culture and traditions of the people of the region.

Founded in 1973, the park is part of the Great Plain of Hungary, a region that is protected as the largest natural grassland in Europe. Highlights of a visit provide glimpses of its vibrant animal life, all from an abundance

Sopron

The allure derives as much from its attractive surroundings as from its many medieval and Baroque buildings that are well-preserved. One of the largest such collections in Europe contains Sopron's 240 protected buildings, 115 of which are officially designated monuments.

Castle Eger

There are many beautiful historic forts, castles, and palaces in Hungary, each steeped in history. Eger Castle (Egri vár) is one of the best known. Situated in the lovely spa town of Eger on the southern slopes of the Bükk Mountains, the gateway to northern Hungary was once protected by Eger Castle. The new style, expanded in the 16th century, was based on contemporary Italian strongholds and was added again after the Turks took over in 1596.

Royal Palace Visegrága

Located in the Danube Curve, just 40 kilometers north of Budapest, above the beautiful old town of Visegrád, the ruins of the Royal Palace of Visegrád and the old citadel are an easy day trip from the capital of Hungary. Under Charles I, the first Royal Palace was built after he and his court relocated to Visegrád in 1316, and was expanded with many Italian flourishes a hundred years later, earning it a reputation as one of the finest palaces in all of Europe.

Hills of Buda

The Buda Hills rise to heights of more than 518 meters on the western outskirts of Budapest and are crossed by an extensive network of trails, ideal for walking or cycling. You can find various bike rental companies throughout the area, or you can take the tram to the Cog Railway terminus, which climbs up to the lovely Széchenyi-residential neighborhood. The narrow-gauge Children's Railway follows a scenic route to Huvösvölgy from here.

National Park & Caves at Aggtelek

Bradley Cave, one of the biggest and most impressive stalactite caves in Europe and the largest in Hungary, is protected by Aggtelek National Park (Aggteleki Nemzeti Park) in northern Hungary, about 2.5 hours by car from Budapest, on the Slovak border. With a seven-kilometer-long main tunnel, the Baradla Cave extends for over 25 kilometers.

Cathedral of Pecs

Sts. lies dominating the northwest corner of the fortified Pecs Old Town. Founded on the site of an ancient Roman burial chapel, the cathedral exhibits influences from many different cultures, like so many historic attractions in Hungary. Tihany Tihany

Tihany is one of Lake Balaton's most popular holiday resorts.
