Itinerary

Ancient records record the existence of Madurai from the 3rd century BC. It was a trading town, especially for spices, and according to legend, the third Sangam (gathering of Tamil scholars and poets) was home. Over the ages, Madurai came under the reign of the Cholas, Pandyas, local Muslim sultans, Hindu Vijayanagar rulers, and the Nayaks, who ruled until 1736 and created the old city's lotus shape.

Kulasekara Pandya built the original temple, but the first Nayak king of Madurai, Viswanatha Nayak (1559-1600), under the guidance of Ariyanatha Mudaliar, took the initiative to reconstruct the foundation. During the reign of Thirumalai Nayak between 1623 and 1655 CE by the Nayak rulers, the temple was significantly enlarged to the present structure.

With an estimated 33,000 sculptures in the temple, the temple is an architectural marvel. Within the temple, there are several corridors, halls, and shrines. With wonderful artwork, the corridors and pillars are decorated.
