The whole Sanjeevani Mountain had been brought to Hanuman as he was unable to recognize the herb. Some parts of the mountain, namely Dolukanda, Rumassala, Ritigala, Thailand, and Kachchativu, fall in five places in Lanka while flying. The Epic Of Ramayana
The Ramayana is an ancient Sanskrit epic and an important part of the Hindu canon attributed to the poet Valmiki. The Ramayana consists of 7 chapters (Kānda), one of the most important literary works of ancient India, and narrates the tale of the abduction of Rama's wife Sita by Rāvana, the demon (Rākshasa) king of Lanka. Ayodhya in India begins with the Ramayana and climaxes at Lankapura (Sri Lanka).
Ramayana has fascinated many centuries and had a profound influence on art and culture in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. There are several places that are related to the Ramayana in Sri Lanka.
The Rāvana Abduction of Sita.
Rāvana was Lanka's ruler, and there were nine other kingdoms. He was known as Davis (or Dasa Shirsha), meaning 10 heads, and for his ten kingdoms, he had ten crowns, one each. His Surpanakha sister went to Jambudweepa to do some business. At his hermitage, Surpanakha chanced upon Rama and became enamored of the handsome prince. Rama, who was loyal to his wife Sita, did not respond and asked Surpanakha to approach the unmarried Lakshmana.
Surpanakha, who was embarrassed by this, tried to attack Sita in frustration, claiming that Sita was the reason for her disdain for the men. Then Lakshmana intervened and cut Surpanakha's nose off. Surpanakha, frightened and in distress, immediately flew to Lanka to seek Rāvana's safety. When Ravana asked the cause of his sister, Surpanakha said she saw Sita, a lady of incomparable beauty, and she wanted to bring her to Ravana. Sita Devi was held at the Lankapura palace of Queen Mandothari. The place where Sita was kept captive is known as Sita Kotuwa, which means the Sinhala Fort of Sita. It is assumed that Rāvana had an aircraft repair center near Sita Kotuwa at Gurulupotha. In Sinhala, Gurulupotha means Pieces of Birds.
Taking Sita from Sita Kotuwa to Ashok Vatika
Ravana transferred Sita from Sita Kotuwa to the salubrious mountain garden of Ashok Vatika. The route was also said to be spectacularly beautiful, as Ravana wanted to show his kingdom's beauty to Sita. Still evident is the Chariot Route atop the mountain range. Sita Devi's tears are believed to have created the Sita Tear Pond close to the Chariot Road. Visitors were also able to see the famous Sita flowers that are endemic to this area.
Ashok Vatika Captivity
Ashok Vatika is a garden where Sita was kept captive by Rāvana. It's in the Sita Eliya region close to Nuwara Eliya city. Part of the famous Ashok Vatika is the Hakgala Gardens, located at the base of the Hakgala Rock. A barren area atop the Hakgala Rock Jungle where Sita was held captive is the Sita Pokuna. Sita Devi is scheduled to bathe in Sita Eliya's stream. The Temple of Sita Amman is located in this location.
Sita a Sita
Sugriva, the founder of the Vanara or monkey kingdom (also spelled Sugreeva), commanded his armies of monkeys to search the four corners of the earth for Sita. Southwards traveled Hanuman, Angada, Jambavan, and other heroes. The only one strong enough to cross the ocean in order to reach Lanka was Hanuman. Surasa Devi, the Naga maiden en route to Lanka, checked Hanuman while crossing the ocean. That place is called Nagadeepa now.
Ashok Vatika, Hanuman encounters Sita and Rāvana
Hanuman agreed to test the power of King Rāvana and his army of Rakshas after meeting Sita at Ashok Vatika. By uprooting trees and destroying the garden, he called for war. Hanuman was brought into the presence of Rāvana after being captured by the Rakshasa guards. In response, Hanuman set the houses in the town on fire. One such torched place is Ussangoda. Hanuman was resting in Mani Kattuthar on the way back to India. Nearby is the village of Kondagala in Tamil, known as Kondakalai, where Sita is said to have ruined her hair as she passed by. The village also includes Sita Google, which are rice balls given to Sita by Ravana; she declined and threw them away
After the visit by Hanuman, Sita is secret
One such complex of tunnels and caves is Rāvanagoda, which means the position of Ravana in the Kotmale district. Another ingenious network of paths linking all major areas of King Rāvana's city is Istreepura. In Sinhala, Istreepura means Women's Field.
Fight Planning
Gayathri Peedum is the place where Lord Shiva gave super natural powers to Ravana's son Mehganath prior to the war. Neelawari is situated on the Jaffna peninsula in the north of the world, a position where Lord Rama shot an arrow to the ground to procure water for his army upon arrival in Lanka
Fight breaks out
During the height of the Indrajit War, Rāvana's elder son decapitated Sita Devi's lookalike in front of Hanuman to break his spirit. In the Avissawella town, this place is known as Sitawaka. Yudhaganawa, the battlefield in Sinhala, is the location where the great battles took place in Wasgamuwa. Both Rama, Lakshmana, and the monkey army lie unconscious on the battlefield after being struck by Indrajit's Brahmastra. Hanuman uprooted the entire peak with all the herbs growing there from the mountain and returned to Lanka, as he could not recognize which herbs to pick. Sections of the hill fall at five locations in Sri Lanka
Rāvana's Collapse
Dunuwila is the location where Lord Rama shot Brahmastra at King Ravana, who was in charge of the war in Laggala, where he was murdered. Laggala is derived from the word 'Elakke Gala' in Sinhala, meaning Goal Rock. To watch Lord Rama's army, Laggala served as a sentry point. Geographically, this is the highest part of the city of Rāvana in the northern region. After Ravana's death, his body was held in Sinhala at Yahangala, Divan, or Bed Rock.
The War
After the battle, Sita met Rama, and Divurumpola is the place she went under the "Agni" fire test, where she proved to Rama her innocence and purity. In Sinhala, Divurumpola means the Place of Oath. Vantharamulai is the place where after the chaos of the war, Lord Rama, Sita Devi, Lakshmana and Hanuman rested. The location where they had their first meal after the war is believed to be Amaranthakali.
Around Munneshwaram
It is believed that the Ramayana is predated by Munneswaram and there was a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. For Shiva, Munneswaram means the first temple (Munnu + Easwaran). There was already a Shiva Lingam here when Lord Rama visited the place. Rama left for Ayodhya with Sita in one of the vimanas of King Ravana after his triumphant war. He thought that Bramhaasthi (a malevolent black shadow) was trailing him because he had killed King Ravana, who was a Brahmin.
Dolu Kanda-Drops of Sanjeevani
Both Rama and Lakshmana were struck by powerful arrows at various points during the war and fell unconscious. Hanuman was told to fetch life-saving herbs from the Himalayas in order to get them back to life. Hanuman went up to the hill, raised the entire hill, and took it with him as he could not find the herbs that saved his life alone. In Sri Lanka, parts of the hill fall on five sites, namely Rumasala in Galle, Dolu Kanda in Hiripitiya, Ritigala in Habarana,
Diwurumpola
A 'place of oath' means Divurumpola. This is the location where Sita went through the "Agni" test. She came out unscathed and proved that she was innocent and pure. The message of the triumph of Rama over Ravana has been sent to Sita. She was caught on a palanquin before Rama after a bath and decorated with jewels. She was overwhelmed with emotion when she met her husband after such a long time, but Rama seemed lost in thought. He spoke at length, "I killed my enemy." As a true king, I have done my job.
Temple of Sita Amman, Sita Eliya
During her stay at Ashok Vatika, the stream flowing from the hill catered to the needs of Sita Devi. In this stream, she is said to have bathed. Three idols were found in the stream about a century ago, one of which was that of Sita. The idols are believed to have been worshipped for centuries at this site. There is now a temple by the side of this stream for Rama, Sita Devi, Lakshmana, and Hanuman.
Chariot Route and Pond Sita Tear
The mountain summit next to the mountain range overlooking Pussallawa's Frotoft Estate is the location where Hanuman first set foot on mainland Lanka. From that mountain range, this mountain known as Pawala Malai is visible. Between King Ravana's capital city and Ashoka Vatika, these hills stand tall.
Kondakalai Kondakalai
Like several other towns and villages in Sri Lanka, Kondakalai (also known as Kondagala) also derives its name from the Ramayana, when King Ravana took Sitadevi on a chariot to Ashoka Vatika, her hair was distorted by the speed of the chariot. Konda Kalai means deranging of hair in Tamil. To date, the villagers are living with this event's legacy. When King Ravana took Sitadevi to Ashoka Vatika on his chariot, he provided her with balls of vitaminized rice for refreshment. But during her journey, Sitadevi, who did not want to eat anything given by King Ravana, dispersed the rice balls all over the spot, and they are found up to date along the chariot route. These rice balls are called Sita Google by the local people and they recommend them for their kids as a treatment for stomach disorders and headaches. For prosperity, farmers should keep them in their cash boxes or grain pots.
Kattuther Mani
This is a rock on the estate in Labookelle. Hanuman encountered Sitadevi and rested on this hilltop on his way to announce this happy knowledge to Rama. After meeting Sitadevi, the hilltop where Hanuman is thought to have rested is known as Mani Kattuther. An open temple stands on top of it today, with statues of Rama, Sitadevi, Lakshmana, and Hanuman. Locals often visit the temple.
Ishtreepuras
Ishtreepura means a region of women in Sinhalese. This was one of the places where King Ravana, as a precautionary measure, hid Sitadevi. Owing to Hanuman's advent, he was forced to take this measure. In this place, there are lots of intrusive tunnels and caves. Ishtreepura appears to be part of a wide, ingenious network of roads, linked to all the major areas of the city of King Ravana. Many of the tunnels have not yet been completely explored.
Cave & Tunnel Network of Ravana
The Ravana Cave & tunnels prove King Ravana's architectural genius beyond doubt. As a fast means of transport through the hills, the tunnels acted as hidden passages as well. The tunnels are believed to have linked all the major towns, airports, and dairy farms. A close look at the tunnels shows that they are man-made formations and not natural ones. This Buddhist shrine in Kalutara was where the palace and the tunnel of King Ravana once stood.
Kotuwa Sita
In Sinhala, Sita Kotuwa (also known as Seetha Kotuwa) means 'Sita's Fort' and got its name because of the captivity of Sitadevi at this spot. Initially, Sitadevi was kept in the palace of Queen Mandothari until she was transferred to Sita Kotua and then to Ashoka Vatika. The ruins of later civilizations are the remains found at Sita Kotuwa.
Weragantota by Weragantota
Weragntota (also written Weraganthota), in Sinhala, means 'a landing place for aircraft.' In King Ravana's Vimana, Weragantota is thought to have been the capital of King Ravana and the first place where Sitadevi was brought to Lanka. The present jungles are the location where Lankapura city once stood. The city had a beautiful palace surrounded by waterfalls, streams, and varieties of flora and fauna for queen Mandothari.
Dunnville
The place from where Lord Rama shot the Brahmaastharam at King Ravana is Dunuwilla, which ultimately killed him. Dhunu means Arrow and the Lake of Vila Means. Since Lord Rama shot his arrow from this lake, this place got its name. On the outskirts of Wasgamuwa National Park, Dunuvila is situated in the Matale district.
Manavari Manavari
Metavari is Rama's first lingam built and prayed, and this lingam is called Ramalinga Shivan to date. Rameshwaram, named after Rama, is the only other lingam in the world. Shiva asked Rama to install the first lingam near the banks of Deduru Oya, approximately five miles from Munneswaram. In Tamil, Magawa Aru is Deduru Oya
Temple of Rama at Rattota
In this place, the Rama temple is the only one. Ratto is approximately 9.5 km from Matale. It is possible to reach the privately run temple on the Matale-Rattota-Riverston-Pallegama road. This is one of the most scenic ways to meet Laggala (on the northern side of Knuckles) from Matale.
