Day 1: Arrive in Leh and acclimatize
- Morning: Arrive at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL). A taxi transfer to your hotel is recommended.
- Afternoon: Relax at the hotel and get used to the altitude. You can use this time to finalize your bike rental and permits.
- Evening: Take a gentle walk to the Leh Market to pick up any last-minute supplies. Visit Shanti Stupa for a panoramic view of Leh, but avoid a strenuous climb.
- Overnight: Hotel in Leh.
Day 2: Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La (120 km)
- Morning: After an early breakfast, gear up for the ride to Nubra Valley, crossing the famous Khardung La Pass (18,380 ft). The roads are often challenging, with a mix of tarmac and gravel.
- Afternoon: Continue your ride down into Nubra Valley. The terrain will change dramatically from high-altitude passes to a sandy, green valley.
- Evening: Visit the Diskit Monastery, famous for its 106-foot Maitreya Buddha statue. Later, head to the Hunder Sand Dunes and enjoy an optional double-humped Bactrian camel ride.
- Overnight: Camp or guesthouse in Nubra.
Day 3: Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso via Shyok (150 km)
- Morning: The most adventurous riding day. Follow the route alongside the Shyok River. Much of this route is off-road and involves multiple water crossings. Be prepared for a challenging and scenic ride.
- Afternoon: Arrive at Pangong Tso, the high-altitude lake featured in the movie 3 Idiots. Take in the surreal views of the deep blue lake against the rugged mountains.
- Evening: Enjoy the serene beauty of the lake as the evening light changes its colors. Rest at your lakeside camp. Remember, power is limited, and it gets cold at night.
- Overnight: Camp near Pangong Lake.
Day 4: pangong Tso to Leh (150 km) and departure
- Morning: Wake up to a breathtaking view of Pangong Tso and ride back towards Leh. You can take the Chang La pass route if road conditions permit. At over 17,500 ft, Chang La is another extremely high pass.
- Afternoon: Ride down towards Leh and return your bike. Spend the afternoon exploring anything you missed in Leh or simply relaxing.
- Evening: Transfer to the Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport for your flight
- Essential packing and safety tips
- Layered clothing: Temperatures can vary drastically between day and night. Pack thermals, fleece jackets, and a waterproof outer layer.
- First-aid kit: Include medicines for AMS, pain relievers, and bandages. A portable oxygen can is a good precaution.
- Bike spares and tools: Carry a puncture repair kit, spare tubes, and basic tools. Know how to make minor repairs yourself.
- Hydration and snacks: Stay hydrated constantly to prevent AMS. Carry energy bars, nuts, and dry fruits.
- Carry cash: ATMs are scarce outside Leh. Carry enough cash for your entire trip.
- Postpaid SIM: Prepaid SIM cards from outside Jammu & Kashmir will not work. Carry a postpaid connection from a network like BSNL or Airtel.
- Ride with a group: For safety, riding in a group is highly recommended, especially on challenging terrain.
